Equestrian Art

About me
I love horses and always have. I have studied art, advertising, computer graphics, printing and publications. I believe that working for yourself is the key to success in America. I am always interested in computer graphics and artistic styles. I enjoy photographing the outdoors, and exploring nature. I also have some very special English Springer Spaniels, including several that I will be competing in Agility and Obedience for fun next year. Check out the AKC pages on agility. It's incredible!
What I'm interested in:
  • Art
I love to draw and paint, to carve leather portraits, to feel the textures and the relief as I mold the leather. Recently I began painting on glass, which is a very interesting way to play with light and texture and color, all at once. Sometimes I will take a pencil portrait and scan it, then take it into Photoshop and play with it. I am thinking about doing some collages from works I have done including combinations of paintings and sketches and photgraphy. The computer makes this all possible in ways we never dreamed of as recently as the seventies. Now, we can add video and animation and sound... it's just incredible what we're capable of with the help of computers.
  • Horses
I love everything about them. Their strength, their elegance, their sheer beauty. The fluidity of their muscles as they move. Just as with our own bodies, animals' movements can be more or less athletic depending on their structure (conformation) and as breeders, we can "create" the type of athletes we want to work with in certain sports if we are careful with the structures we use to work with. I have studied western stock seat, english hunt seat, and dressage. Dreassge is the ultimate. It was originally a form of riding developed by teh early Greeks to enable horses in war to attack and evade attack. A well trained war horse meant survival for the rider and often for the country he represented. Today, however, Dressage is used for everything from simple gymnastic exercises to supple a horse and rider for other activities, up to a highly technical and exacting level which includes the "Dancing" seen demonstrated by the Lippizans of Vienna, which is the closest to the actual war movements of the Greek riders. It is also one of the three international competitions seen in the Olympics, the other two being Show Jumping, which requires a highly skilled team of riders and horses to negotiate an extremely difficult course of obstacles in a limited time with no mistakes; and Cross Country, which requires the horses and riders to negotiate an extremely difficult terrain and obstacles, also in a limited time. All these sports require the horses to be very obedient and yet bold, confident in their own abilities to execute the needed maneuvers... and above all, they must love what they're doing, because injury is a possiblity at all times. Interestingly enough, although the United States is certainly one of the most successful countries in Equestrian Events at the Olympics, we are one of only a few whose teams are not financially supported by our government.
  • Dogs
It was hard for me to decide on a breed to stay with, because I love almost all dogs. I chose Springers for their intelligence and sensitivity and beauty. These dogs can almost read your mind... and they are easy to train, don't require a lot of discipline, and love people... they are so loyal, and so willing to give you their hearts. I also decided (as is normal for me) to "do" Springers differently... I chose to become involved with tricolrs. which are quite rare. Even though a great many people told me they were frowned upon because there weren't many tris who were carefully bred and most had little or no coat, light structure, and poor movement... I decided to play with it. Today i am quite proud of my babies... I wil always love them and am greatful for having them in my life. In times of great sorrow they have comforted me and provided me with reassurance that I was loved and needed.
